This article details a few potential causes and how to approach them if Smaart fails to open.

An error message is displayed

If you are seeing a 3-digit error code, please check our documentation on licensing errors, and submit a ticket if you are unable to find a solution in the knowledge base.

Device does not meet minimum system requirements

Smaart may crash immediately after installation if the device does not meet the minimum system requirements required to run the software. Ensure you are running Smaart on a supported device.

Alternatively, click here for an article on how to determine what level of DirectX your system supports (for Windows computers only).

Corrupt or out-of-date device drivers

Ensure all audio and video device drivers are up to date and supported by your current operating system version.

Additionally, if you are using an audio interface, please check the audio device manufacturer's website for information on supported operating systems.

When Smaart is launching, it checks for available audio devices and their configuration (input/output channels, sampling rate, etc). If a device crashes during startup, it can prevent Smaart from launching successfully. Similarly, if a video driver is unsupported or out of date, it can also cause Smaart to crash.

Smaart creates a log file every time it starts up, named "Smaart [EDITION].log", that records this process. If you are having issues, you can send this log to the support team and we can help diagnose the issue.

The log file is located in:
  • macOS - (MacintoshHD)/<your_username>/Documents/Smaart [EDITION]
  • Windows - C:\Users\<your_username>\My Documents\Smaart [EDITION]

Note: replace [EDITION] with your edition of Smaart (Suite, RT, LE, or SPL)

Invalid configuration / file permissions with Smaart directory

Problems with the Smaart directory can cause a crash to occur on startup, some of these include:

  • Corrupt configuration file
  • Bad microphone correction curve or other imported file
  • Insufficient or corrupt permissions on the Smaart directory
  • Smaart directory itself is corrupt

OneDrive and iCloud can also cause problems with Smaart. Refer to this article for more information.

To troubleshoot, navigate to the /Users/<username>/Documents folder on your computer and rename the "Smaart [Edition]" folder to "OLD_Smaart"

Smaart will automatically create a new folder when it is re-opened and will require you to re-configure the audio device and measurement settings. From there, try re-importing each previously imported file one at a time, closing and reopening Smaart after each import. The bad file in question will cause Smaart to crash again when you go to reopen the program.

Insufficient or invalid permissions on the Documents directory can cause Smaart to crash. If your company or organization has an IT department that manages and deploys your computers, please have them make sure Smaart and the user profile running the application has read / write access to the Documents folder.

If Smaart is still crashing...

Please submit a ticket so that we can help troubleshoot. Be sure to include your Smaart license information, operating system version, and details about the audio interfaces you're using with the software.
