Error 515

Error 515 is an unintended error that can sometimes occur when opening multiple versions or editions of Smaart simultaneously.

The Smaart v9.6.1 and Data Modeler v1.2 updates released in October 2025 should address this problem. Before following the steps in this article, please download the most recent version of Smaart from your license management account. If you are running the most recent version of the software, but Error 515 is still occurring, please submit a ticket so we can investigate.

If you've encountered Error 515, follow the steps below to get Smaart or Data Modeler back up and running.

• Close Data Modeler and any other copies of Smaart
• Restart your computer. If you are on macOS, uncheck “Reopen windows when logging back in.” 
• After restarting, follow the steps in this article to reset your local Smaart activation
• Activate the software as you would normally
• If necessary, close Smaart Data Modeler completely and repeat these steps for other installed versions of Smaart exhibiting Error 515.

If you are unable to activate the software after following these steps, it is possible Smaart's Machine ID has changed. To confirm this, open Smaart and locate the Machine ID. Then log into your my.rationalacoustics.com account, and compare the displayed Machine ID to the one on your online account. If they are different, you can manually remove the computer from your account so you have a free seat to activate the new Machine ID. 

If the Machine ID did not change, but you still cannot activate, please submit a ticket.

While Data Modeler and measurement-capable editions of Smaart are intended to be open at the same time and used in tandem, we recommend letting DM fully boot up before opening a second edition of Smaart, and vice-versa.

We do not recommend running multiple versions of editions of Smaart simultaneously, such as Smaart v9 and Smaart v8, Smaart Suite and Smaart LE, etc.
